Buy a script, or have one built?

Custom is not automatically better. It is better for a specific set of things, and worse for the rest.

I build custom scripts for a living, so treat the following with that in mind. It is still true: most servers should buy most of their scripts and build a few.

Buy when the thing is solved

A fuel script is a fuel script. A garage is a garage. When thousands of servers need the same behaviour, someone has already built it, tested it against players trying to break it, and fixed the things you have not thought of yet. Paying 15 euros for that is a bargain no custom quote can beat.

Buy when the feature is not what makes your server yours, when the released version already does roughly what you want, and when you can live with its interface.

Build when the thing is yours

Build when the script is the reason people play on your server rather than the one next door. Your economy, your progression, the mechanic your community talks about. That is not a feature you want almost-fitting, and it is not one you want your competitor to be able to buy.

Build, too, when you have already bought three scripts to do one job and are gluing them together. At that point the custom quote is competing with the total you have already spent, not with the price of one store item.

The costs people forget

A rough rule

If a feature is on your list of what makes the server different, build it. If it is on the list of things every server needs, buy it and move on. Most servers get this backwards: they spend custom money on a garage and then wonder why their signature mechanic feels generic.

The middle option

There is a third path people forget: buy the script and pay a developer to extend it. This works only when the source is readable, which rules out escrowed resources entirely. When it does work it is often the cheapest good outcome, because you are paying for the twenty percent you actually need instead of the whole thing.

Check the license before you plan on this. Some authors are fine with edits for your own server, some are not, and finding out afterwards is an unpleasant conversation.

Questions
about this

Is a custom script always better quality?

No. A popular store script has been run by thousands of servers and hardened by all of them. A custom script has been tested by one developer and you. Custom wins on fit and ownership, not automatically on robustness.

Can I start with a bought script and go custom later?

Yes, and it is often the sensible order. Run the bought one, find out what you actually need from real players, then have that built. You will write a much better spec after six months of complaints than before launch.
